How To Get Over A Heartbreak

How To Get Over A Heartbreak

There’s no escaping it - breakups suck. They hurt. You’re left with a million feelings that you don’t know what to do with. Time is oftentimes the ultimate healer, but to start making positive steps toward that healing process, we came up with twelve ways to soothe a heartbreak.

  1. Lean on your support system

Let it out to your closest friends or your most trusted family members. Having people you can talk to and sort out your feelings is a great start to healing.

  1. Write it out

Writing all of your thoughts and emotions down on paper can be a helpful way to lay it all out. Clear your mind by doing a “word vomit” in your journal.

  1. Let yourself feel

It’s not healthy to bottle up all your emotions or pretend they aren’t there. Let yourself feel what you’re feeling - recognize them, accept them, and then take the appropriate steps to deal with them.

  1. Forget the “what-ifs”

Don’t get yourself hung up on all the “what-ifs” of the breakup. Forget the ways it could’ve happened or the things you could’ve done to change it. There’s no use in getting caught up in it. What’s happened has happened, don’t beat yourself up over not being able to change the past.

  1. Look to inspiration

What inspires and uplifts you? Immerse yourself in those things to clear your head. Paint, bake, sing, dance, read… Keep yourself motivated and inspired, even when you’re feeling down.

  1. Cry

It’s okay to have a good cry sesh. We all need them. Once you let it all out, a weight will be lifted off your shoulders. Do it in a comfortable, safe space for you. If you need to let it out in front of someone, call up your closest loved one that you know you can lean on.

  1. Practice healthy distractions

This point somewhat relates to point 5, but there are additional ways to distract yourself from a heartbreak that are healthy for you. Go for a run, meditate, do some yoga, have a killer workout, dance it out - there are so many different ways to increase your endorphins and keep your mind off of the pain.

  1. Make peace

Accept what has happened and find peace with it in whatever way you best can. You are strong and you are worthy of so much love. A relationship doesn’t define that. Find peace and put your best foot forward in whatever you do next. We believe in you!

  1. Recognize both sides

It’s easy to put all of the blame on one side. Recognize both sides and realize that it might’ve not been easy on the other person, either. It’s hard and it takes a calm, open mind to do so, but it’s so crucial to acknowledge.

  1. Sit back and breathe

Let yourself breathe. Meditation, as mentioned in point 7, can be a great option for clearing your head and relaxing. Sometimes we get ourselves so worked up over something that sitting back and focusing on doing something as simple as breathing can really do wonders.

  1. Give it time

Even if you practice all 10 of these other points, the feeling of heartbreak may still be present and painful. Allow yourself time to heal. Understand that these strong feelings have to be dealt with and worked out. It’s okay not to be okay. It’s okay to be a crybaby. Be patient and loving to yourself.
